Undertow was born from an idea, and from watching what the southeast wind does on the Bassin de Thau. That wind often brings bad weather - but it also brings waves, stirring the water into something surfable. Two circular gestures, in a darker shade of blue, connected by a single straight stroke: the shorthand of a swell.
The waves mean a choice - stay home, since the wind will throw sand in your face, or make it a surfing day.
Life keeps producing conditions nobody ordered - some that feel good, some that don't - and the mind decides, with its fears, its memories, its uncertainty about what's next. The only real decision left is whether to meet them or wait them out.
The painting doesn't resolve that question. It simply holds the moment.
A touch of pink and copper offers hope - light, or disruption, depending on how the wind turns. The piece stays open, the way weather stays open, right up until it doesn't.
