Original artwork description
In Under a Restless Sky, the moon appears through a turbulent mass of clouds above a narrow stretch of water. Rather than illuminating the entire landscape, its light emerges in fragments — caught between moving clouds, reflected on the water, and briefly touching the distant shore.
The painting is built around a strong contrast between the immense, textured sky and the quieter horizontal space below. Thick, expressive passages of oil paint give the clouds an almost physical presence, while cooler blues, muted greens and flashes of violet create depth within the darkness.
Below, the water opens into a luminous interval. Broken reflections of silver, pale blue and occasional warm notes interrupt the surrounding shadows, creating a visual tension between movement above and stillness below.
The substantial impasto is central to the work. Rather than describing every element precisely, the paint itself constructs the atmosphere: clouds dissolve into gestures, darkness becomes layered color, and recognizable landscape approaches abstraction.
Part of my ongoing In the Moonlight series, this painting explores the landscape at the point where visibility becomes uncertain. Moonlight reveals only fragments, leaving the rest to remain unresolved.
Under a Restless Sky is not an image of perfect nocturnal calm. It is about the charged silence that exists beneath a changing sky — when darkness, water and light briefly become one continuous space.
