I painted this in color (Blue Pitcher with Cut Lemons) and then, while preparing for a class I thought it would be helpful to show what it is like as an umber painting.
Description: This tonal still life explores the quiet beauty of a simple pitcher and cut lemons through a restrained umber palette. With color largely removed, attention shifts to light, value, and form—the soft illumination across the rounded pitcher emerging gradually from the deeper, warm brown shadow.
Small touches of light along the rim and shoulder suggest the pitcher’s reflective surface without over-defining it, while the lemon wedges are reduced to beautifully simple shapes. The strong shadow mass on the right anchors the composition and provides a rich contrast to the pale, softly painted background.
The limited palette gives the painting the feeling of an old-master study, emphasizing structure and atmosphere rather than local color. Loose edges and visible brushwork preserve a sense of immediacy, while the subtle underlying construction and rebatement lines offer a glimpse into the process of building the composition.
