En plein air painting in Hutsulland, in the heart of Bukovel, during the All-Ukrainian plein air dedicated to the memory of the Ukrainian artist Opanas Zalyvakha.
I was especially inspired by this charming pair of Border Leicester sheep. Their expressive faces with long ears and the incredible texture of their wool made them perfect models for a live study.
The painting is titled “Two”, oil on canvas, 60×80 cm.
For me, painting animals from life is always about more than appearance. It is an attempt to capture mood, energy, and the inner state of the animals. The atmosphere of the Carpathians, the fresh mountain air, and the silence of the mountains made this creative experience truly special.
