Twilight, Waterloo Place (2023) Original Oil Painting by Nicholas Grove

Painted directly from life, this original oil painting captures Waterloo Place in London at twilight.

The transition from daylight into evening offers a particular challenge when painting outdoors. As the light changes, decisions have to be made quickly, balancing the structure of the scene with the atmosphere of the moment.

This small plein air painting forms part of my continuing exploration of London through direct observation—a record of a familiar place at a particular time of day.
