A promise made just before dying, roses instead of a crucifix: Thérèse, from the Mystiques series, gives a free interpretation of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, whose iconography has always leaned on roses, statues showing her holding a crucifix against her chest, covered in them.
She once said, after my death, I will let fall a shower of roses, and that image outlived almost everything else about her. Known as the Little Flower for her modesty, she wears strikingly modern clothing here, yet something in the cut still recalls the Carmelite habit, past and present refusing to fully separate.
The series catches its saints before legend sets in, and Thérèse is no different, dressed for today but still carrying, quietly, the promise that made her famous.
