The Wanderer

Suspended in the clear blue waters of the Pacific, a giant octopus moves effortlessly through a world of light, colour and mystery. Sunbeams break through the surface above, illuminating its curling arms while small fish, corals and underwater vegetation disappear into the deeper water below.

With this painting I wanted to capture the extraordinary intelligence, movement and almost otherworldly appearance of the octopus. Its constantly changing form gives the impression that it is not simply swimming, but travelling through its own mysterious world.

Inspired by the rich marine life surrounding Vancouver Island, this original oil painting combines detailed wildlife painting with an atmospheric underwater landscape. The warm orange and red tones of the octopus create a strong contrast against the luminous blues of the ocean, making the animal the unmistakable centre of the composition.
