The Rivers We Share is an original circular abstract painting exploring human connection through a distinctive visual language of flowing forms, natural texture, and imagined landscapes.
The painting grew from something I often think about: how much of who we become is shaped by other people. Relationships have their own currents. We carry our individual histories and directions, yet when our lives meet, something changes. Experiences, trust, disagreements, support, ideas and memories pass between us, leaving traces that become part of our own story.
Across the round canvas, forms move towards one another, overlap, separate and reappear. They sit somewhere between river currents, eroded terrain, clouds and mountain formations, without becoming any one of them. I like this ambiguity — the possibility that the same shape can feel like water, earth or air, and that the landscape can also be read as something emotional and deeply human.
This is where the title The Rivers We Share comes from. For me, a meaningful relationship is not about becoming the same. It is about remaining ourselves while being changed, sometimes almost imperceptibly, by travelling alongside another person.
Acrylic and natural sand are layered across the stretched canvas to create a tactile, mineral surface in soft grey, blue-grey, white and deeper charcoal tones. Light moves differently across the raised and smoother areas, so the painting reveals new details and a changing sense of depth throughout the day.
The circular format is also part of its meaning. I think of the circle as a space without corners: open, continuous, with no prescribed beginning or end. Here it allows the different currents to inhabit the same space while retaining their own rhythm.
The Rivers We Share is ultimately about the geography created between people — the paths we share, the influence we have on one another, and the traces we continue to carry when life moves in a new direction.
Its restrained palette, organic movement and sculptural texture give this contemporary abstract landscape a quiet but distinctive presence in modern residential, office and hospitality interiors.
