Original artwork description
An optical illusion in 3D form, 'The Proposal' plays with ideas of perspective and depth of field. When viewed straight on, the enlarged hand appears to be held out some distance from the figure behind it, however the arm has been foreshortened so the sculpture as a whole is much more compact.
'The Proposal' is a sculpture that aims to ask questions of its audience. Is this hand reaching out to offer you something or is it actually asking for something? Is it held out as an invitation or a demand? Is it the hand of friendship? Perhaps it is asking you to join it on a journey? Or is it asking you for help? It's up to the audience to decide as the face is turned away and gives no clue as to its identity.
Made from solid ceramic and finished in a granite effect green glaze, it is a piece that will prompt discussion.
