Chess pieces dissolve into a mosaic of checkerboards, staircases and geometric A crowned chess queen stands divided down the middle, half golden and half black, in this dramatic cubist composition. Sharp geometric planes of ochre, charcoal and cool blue-grey fragment the background like the squares of a chessboard, while fine scratched lines slice through the paint like moves on a board. Thick, scraped oil strokes give the surface depth and tension, and the strong contrast of light and dark speaks of power, strategy and sacrifice. Elegant and thoughtful, this painting is a standout work for a study, office, game room or modern living room. A superb gift for chess lovers.
