The last king (2024) Original Oil Painting by Jan Machac

30 x 35 x 3cm (framed) / 25 x 30cm (actual image size)

£678.75

A white horse strides steadily across the courtyard, the crowd watching in respectful silence. The man in the saddle carries the entire empire on his person — white uniform, green plume, gold orders. Next to him is an adjutant on a dark horse, one step behind, as protocol dictates.

Charles I ruled Austria-Hungary for the last 2 years of its existence. This painting captures him at the moment of representation: proud, calm, undoubting. The world he personified was soon to end.

The painting was based on a contemporary photograph and restored the colors that the black-and-white image had taken. The gold frame is part of the sale and naturally enhances the Habsburg character of the work.
