The Joyride (2026) Original Acrylic Painting by Zakhar Shevchuk

The Joyride centres on a huge yellow vehicle whose oversized black wheels give the composition an immediate figurative identity. Around them, however, certainty begins to disappear. The vehicle is constructed through broad yellow passages, drips, exposed areas and dark gestural marks, allowing the image to hover between representation and abstraction.

Its title deliberately contrasts with the visual weight of the machine. A joyride suggests freedom, speed and spontaneous pleasure; here the vehicle appears heavy, unruly and almost squeezed into the pictorial space. Bright yellow nevertheless gives the work a playful, optimistic charge, preventing its darker forms from taking control.

At 150x200 cm, the painting is deliberately imposing. The scale amplifies both the physicality of Shevchuk’s brushwork and the almost naïve directness of the image, creating a work that can be read from across a room as a yellow machine and, at close range, as an energetic accumulation of marks, surfaces and colour.
