The Conversation (2020) Original Acrylic Painting by Ryan Louder

The Conversation is a large original acrylic painting on canvas, 135 x 160 cm (53 x 63 inches), by London artist Ryan Louder. Neighbours talking on a grey estate — and what the conversation is really about is up to you.

The thing I like about this painting is that the viewer's interpretation will be governed by their own life experience. You can say that about any painting, but in this case more so. The 15 year old me would view this scene completely differently to the 40 year old me. A scene like this was entirely normal growing up, and I would have been more concerned about the dog than anything else. After a couple of decades away from estate life, I am somewhat separated from that world, and my interpretation of the scene is different now.

As with a lot of my paintings, this image appeared on canvas — hypnagogia, please see my bio — and I painted it with no pre sketches or plan. So if you ask me what the conversation is about, your guess is as good as mine.

Painted in acrylic on canvas. Comes as a rolled canvas with several extra inches around the image for a framer to stretch onto a frame or board.

I'm a London-based artist, and my work often reflects vivid and surreal imagery inspired by my unique experience with REM intrusion — a condition where dream-like visions can appear while I'm awake. My paintings explore the boundary between waking reality and the dream world, using layered compositions to create a sense of depth and movement.
