The United States Capitol, photographed in vertical format so the dome carries the full height of the frame. The composition is classical because the building is: base, colonnade, drum, and dome, each element answering the one below it.

As an architect I photograph buildings like this the way they were drawn, on axis and in proportion. The neoclassical language rewards that discipline; every cornice line and column spacing was calculated to be seen exactly this way. This print is a study in how authority is built from geometry.
