Strays (2022) Original Oil Painting by Richard K. Jolley

Some time ago, I was allowed to tag along on a cattle drive, so that I could collect reference material. Two paintings have resulted from that experience. This is one of them.

A cowboy collects a couple of strays that have veered off the trail.

There's a balance between tranquility and the subtle sense of movement imparted by the cows and the posture of the horse and rider. The lighting in the scene creates a sense of late afternoon ambiance with the sun casting shadows and enhancing the golden tones of the field. This artwork captures a serene, everyday moment in rural life with a rich palette and a composition that draws the eye across the various elements of the scene.

The background is a lush display of trees in autumn shades, ranging from yellow to orange to deep reds and purples, adding depth and vibrancy to the scene. The texture of the brushwork gives the foliage a soft, almost impressionistic quality, contrasting with the detailed rendering of the animals and rider.
