Storyteller (2024) Original Mixed-media Painting by Matt Mak

This work grew out of the moments I spent reading storybooks with my daughter. As each story unfolded, its imagined world seemed to come alive before our eyes, inviting us to step inside. Drawing on the aesthetics of traditional Chinese painting, I used small mountains to divide the composition into different scenes, allowing the viewer’s gaze to wander through the painting as though travelling through the chapters of a story. Boats arrive laden with gifts, carrying a child’s hopes and imagination. In a child’s world, stories, wishes and reality are connected by a path that can be freely travelled.
