The river was quiet, the trees heavy with summer foliage, and the mountains almost disappearing behind all that green. Then the storks crossed the sky.

It lasted only a moment, but suddenly the whole landscape felt different. The birds drew my eye upward from the still water, over the trees and toward the distant mountains. I wanted to keep that movement in the painting without making the storks separate from their surroundings. They belong to this river and this season.

I built the landscape through changing greens, from deep shadows and cooler foliage to warm leaves catching the sun. Below, the river gives the dense vegetation room to breathe.

For me, Storks Over the Summer River holds something I love about painting outdoors: you can return to the same landscape many times, but sometimes a few seconds are enough to make one day unforgettable.
