Somnium II lets the face emerge from, and return to, the paper. The central features are concentrated in deep umber and black, while the edges break into stains, drips and untouched white. With the eyes closed, the subject seems neither asleep nor absent, but suspended inside a private depth that cannot be entered. The work pushes the Somnium series further from portraiture towards apparition: identity remains recognisable even as its boundaries begin to dissolve.

Oil on 290 gsm paper, 29.7 × 40 cm. Unframed. Signed on the front and back. A signed Certificate of Authenticity is included.
