Silver is one of the most rewarding and demanding subjects a painter can take on. It has no colour of its own, only what it borrows, and here the body of the kettle gathers up the surrounding plum, soft greens and warm coppery lights, throwing them back in shifting reflections. The crisp highlights along the spout, handle and lid were placed with care to give the metal its convincing shine.
