A woman sits at a table with a plate of oranges. She's not looking at them. She's not really looking at you either, her gaze drifts slightly upward, as if she's thinking about something that has nothing to do with the room she's in.
I was interested in that tension, the stillness of a figure against the brightness of the fruit. The oranges almost glow. She doesn't. The painting ended up being about that contrast: warmth and cool, presence and distance.
