I was recently lucky enough to spend a day with some black rhinos and learned so many interesting facts about their origins and some of the conservation methods which are being used to protect them as a species. This one's named after the African grasslands of their natural environment.
I used many different materials to create this piece; wire for the structure, stone-effect plasters and resins for the body, epoxy clay to sculpt the prehensile (hooked) lip used for feeding from trees and shrubs. I wanted to create a rough, earthy piece which portrayed strength and power, but used a fractured, semi-complete surface to illustrate the fragility of these endangered breeds.
Earlier this year I entered this piece in the Teravarna international exhibition of animal art where it was awarded 'Honerable Mention'.
