I didn't know what I was making when I started. Some things simply called, and I followed - the brush finding a horizon before I'd decided there should be one. The canvas split itself into two zones almost on its own, and what showed up in the lower half felt like proof of something that had been sitting in the upper half all along, unseen but never absent.

That's the idea the painting settled on without me choosing it first: nothing here is invisible, only unrevealed. What you see below is not a different moment from what's above - it's the same truth, caught at the point where it finally surfaces.

Painted on the Bassin de Thau, where the water does this exact thing every day - holds everything, shows almost nothing, until the light shifts and it does.
