Freak Swell, Cornwall — Evening, June 2015.

The swell arrived without warning that June — a distant gift from an Icelandic storm system, heavy and hollow where the water should have been flat and forgiving. It breaks now with a winter's weight, throwing spray back off the lip in a long white plume that hangs against the headland. The light has gone soft and gold, the tide pulling back to leave the sand mirror-still.

A lone figure walks in from the water's edge, fins in hand, wetsuit dark against the pale sand. The waves keep coming behind them, indifferent, still breaking long after anyone's left to ride them.
