Red Moscow (2026) Original Mixed-media Painting by BAST

This artwork is a fantastical window into the very heart of Russia, where reality transforms into a fairy tale. Crafted from mirrors, the window becomes a portal to an extraordinary world: beyond its frame unfolds snow-covered Red Square, the magnificent Saint Basil’s Cathedral, and wintertime Moscow, above which a woman in a traditional red Russian folk costume and an embroidered kokoshnik rides a powerful black horse.

Who is she — a fairy-tale heroine or a legendary warrior maiden? Perhaps she is the krasna devitsa, the beautiful maiden of Russian folklore, dressed in a richly embroidered red sarafan — beautiful, proud, and free, embodying the character, strength, and soul of the city. Her black horse carries her above the snow-covered rooftops, transforming the familiar Moscow landscape into a myth where history, folk culture, and imagination merge into one.

Perhaps this is Moscow itself, personified — majestic, vibrant, and untamed, preserving the memory of its past while moving boldly into the future.
