Autumn Leaves, An interplay of red and black (2025) Photograph by Cornelia Weber

25 x 35 x 0.1cm (unframed) / 29 x 39cm (actual image size)

£166.17

Although I tend to prefer subtle tones and often find primary colours too bold, I have always had a weakness for the contrast between black and red. It is not quite as stark and uncompromising as the contrast between black and white, yet the two colours seem to bring out the best in each other. Shades of red gain depth and vibrancy when paired with black, while the red gives the black an enigmatic presence.
For this composition, I placed the leaves and blossoms on the surface of the water. Some of the nasturtium petals rest so lightly on the water that they seem to float effortlessly. The leaves of the Prunus cerasifera, already turned red by the onset of autumn, gradually sink beneath the surface. Where they lie just beneath the surface, the thin film of water acts like a magnifying glass, revealing their delicate textures and subtle gradations of colour. Only a few delicate highlights from the water's surface enrich the quiet interplay between black and red.

Printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308 gsm, a 100% cotton fine art paper with a smooth matte surface. Its archival quality, high color depth, and exceptional detail reproduction make it one of the best papers for fine art photography.
Hand-signed and numbered.
