MATERIALS & SUSTAINABILITY:

I create sustainable art and all materials are chosen as consciously as they are used.

The work is created with professional archival and lightfast acrylic, watercolour and ink on mineral stone paper — a surface composed primarily of calcium carbonate derived from limestone, with a smooth, velvety texture that combines the tactile quality of stone with the flexibility and lightness of paper. Unlike most traditional substrates, it does not buckle or warp when exposed to moisture. The layered pigments and particular qualities of the surface give the work a visual presence that shifts with ambient and directional light as well as viewing angle. The painting is alive and responsive to the conditions of its display environment.

Environmental consciousness lies at the heart of my material selection. Mineral stone sheet production requires significantly fewer natural resources and toxic additives than canvas or traditional paper - no deforestation, no heavy water use, no chemical bleaching. The paints used are water-based with low or zero VOC, and without the harmful solvents associated with oil-based mediums.

SERIES: Veils

'Pollito' forms part of the Specimens series, which interprets fragments of the subconscious and the molecular as evidence of something not yet understood. The works visualise unseen biological systems, unfamiliar organisms and remnants of unknown processes, occupying the uncertain territory between observation and explanation. Each work offers a clue to a larger world, while resisting the certainty that would allow that world to be fully reconstructed.

The series draws on the impulse to investigate, classify and understand – to find patterns and structures within what initially appears unfamiliar. It moves between scientific curiosity and imagination, considering the point at which the interpretation of an observation is mistaken for knowledge. The unknown is not treated as a problem to be solved, but as a source of wonder, continued discovery and welcome ambiguity.
