Peonies in Evening Light (2015) Original Oil Painting by Gray Jacobik

This painting is based on a photograph I took some years ago and always loved. I had actually printed and framed the photograph, and one day designed I wanted to use it as the basis for a large-format floral in oil. I find the painstaking quality of painting something that I cannot see accurately “up close”, immensely satisfying when I can get it to look right from a distance, and I love the dramatic quality of this work: the high contrast between the whites, grey and pinks, and the dark browns and deep teal. This is a large painting, 40x30 inches (103.6 x 77.7 cm), oil on linen, in a deep gallery-wrapped edge that is 2 inches (5.2 cm) deep and painted the same dark brown and the surrounding background. Signed and dated on the back (and it bears my mark on the lower right hand front corner), this work is ready-to-hang but could, of course, be framed as the owner wishes.
