Palmtree illusion (2024) Photograph by Folker Michaelsen

This image started as a photographic experiment during a several-week camel trekking journey through the Sahara in Mauritania in 2024.

Using intentional camera movement (ICM) and combining several exposures in-camera, I transformed a simple palm tree into something quite different. The overlapping shapes, soft lines and warm colours give the image a light, almost weightless appearance.

I particularly like how the original subject is still there, but no longer immediately recognisable. It leaves room for the viewer's own imagination.
