Original artwork description
Two textures, one painting. The smooth, glossy ceramic of the teapot and the rumpled cotton gingham beneath it present two entirely different painting challenges, and placing them together was the point.
The warm amber and red of the teapot push hard against the cool blue and grey of the cloth, each colour sharpened by the presence of the other. The checkered pattern, folded and creased beneath the weight of the pot, gave the composition rhythm and movement, a lively counterpoint to the stillness of the teapot itself.
Painted in oils, this is a work about the energy that contrast creates, of warm against cool, smooth against rough, still against restless.
