Artwork description
Near St Ives, Cornwall, 2015, Nikon full frame camera.
A spring swell breaking off the North Cornwall coast near St Ives, 2015, shot on a Nikon full frame as the sun approached the horizon. All day the swell had been building — the ocean still carrying the restless energy of winter — and by the time it hit double overhead the light had turned to that deep, still amber of a lengthening spring evening on the Atlantic coast.
The image is composed in calm horizontal bands, each a different state of water. In the foreground, dark unbroken sea, heavy and pewter-toned. Then the wave itself — the isolated detail the eye keeps returning to — a clean, powerful wall pitching and peeling from right to left, its face briefly translucent green where the low sun catches it, the lip throwing white spray that drifts like smoke in the cooling evening air. Behind it, a second swell lines up, patient and unbroken, waiting. Beyond that, the flat open Atlantic stretches back to a horizon sitting beneath an unbroken amber sky.
No surfer, no boat, no human trace. Just the ocean still running on winter's momentum, delivering something powerful and unhurried into a calm spring evening — the energy of weeks at sea releasing itself quietly at the edge of the frame as the light slowly goes.
Shot on a Nikon full frame camera and printed on Hahnemühle Bamboo archival paper. Full frame.
Each print is made entirely by hand in Gary's own studio. Every stage, from camera to finished print, is carried out by Gary himself. Never outsourced. Always personal.
