Orange Spray

Near St Ives, Cornwall — 2015.

The swell had been building all day. By evening, the waves were getting big, and the low sun had turned the sky a deep orange.

I know this stretch of coast well, but days like this still catch my attention. The sea had that leftover energy you get after a run of winter storms, with one powerful wave after another rolling in from the Atlantic.

I was watching this wave as it started to pitch and peel across the reef. The face caught the last light and turned a translucent green, while the lip threw spray into the air like smoke. Behind it, another swell was already lining up.

There was nobody in the water and no boat on the horizon. Just the sea, the fading light and the sound of the waves breaking. I love that moment when the ocean is full of energy but the evening itself feels completely still.

The print

I produce each print in my own studio on Hahnemühle Photo Rag archival paper. Every print is checked carefully before packing, and I use plastic-free packaging.
