Some paintings draw you in through colour. This one invites you to slow down.

In No. 0031, overlapping flowers unfold in a restrained palette of soft grey, ivory and warm beige. Broad petals extend beyond the edges of the canvas, while smaller, curling forms move across them. Visible brushstrokes follow these curves, giving the surface a gentle rhythm. With no strong colour contrasts to dominate the eye, subtle shifts of light and tone become the focus.

From a distance, the painting feels quiet and almost monochromatic. Up close, its layered forms and traces of the brush reveal a more restless movement. The flowers remain recognisable, yet their unfolding shapes bring the image close to abstraction.

This painting is part of The Way of Flowers, my ongoing conceptual project in which I plan to create exactly 1,000 paintings. I expect this process to take 10–20 years. I conceive the project as one continuous artwork unfolding through time, rather than a series of separate images. I return to the same floral structure, allowing colour, gesture and the experience of each particular moment to shape its next appearance.

The number and date mark this painting’s place within that ongoing process. No. 0031 is not a final version of the image, but one of its successive states—a quiet passage in a work that continues to grow.

For a collector, acquiring this painting means bringing a tangible fragment of that evolving work into their own space. It remains part of The Way of Flowers wherever it lives.
