When I was eleven years old my father got a glamorous new girlfriend who had lots of vinyl records. Among them was a Nina Simone. I was hooked at the first song, 'Ne Me Quitte Pas'. She was a classical pianist and troubled artist. I once read that she had body guards not to protect her from the public but the protect the public from her. She is a queen! In the painting she holds an African fan, during her life she was a constant activist.
