Next, please (Der Nächste bitte) (2013) Original Acrylic Painting by Ralf Schmidt

“Next, please” reminds me of those moments in life when, all of a sudden, something is no longer the way it used to be. A piece of stability is missing, something has lost its balance—and yet life goes on. No one waits for us to be whole again or ready.
The chair stands there, with only three legs. The fourth lies next to it, as if it had just broken off or simply been lost. And yet the call already goes out: “Next, please.”
Perhaps we’re familiar with situations like this: Something breaks away, a certainty vanishes, and while we’re still trying to understand what happened, the next step is already waiting for us.
To me, there’s something both absurd and very human about this. Life doesn’t always ask if we’re ready. Sometimes all we can do is sit down—even if a leg is missing—and figure out how to move forward.
