Mount Fuji Eruption — from the series “Paradise Still Open”

Mount Fuji Eruption is a staged photographic work from Bondero’s ongoing series Paradise Still Open, exploring a world in which pleasure, glamour and entertainment continue even as everything around them begins to collapse.

Against the spectacular backdrop of an erupting volcano, an extravagant group of characters occupies a decadent poolside scene filled with luxury, absurdity and visual excess. Fashion, cocktails, a turquoise vintage car, inflatable toys, a television, a disco ball and unexpected animals coexist with fire, destruction and impending catastrophe. Yet no one appears particularly concerned.

The contrast between disaster and celebration creates an atmosphere that is simultaneously seductive, humorous and unsettling. Bright commercial colours and cinematic staging transform catastrophe into spectacle, reflecting on consumer culture, escapism and our strange ability to continue enjoying paradise while the world around us is falling apart.
