Melt No. 1 (2026) Original Mixed-media Painting by Victor Selin

50.8 x 60.96 x 5.08cm (framed)

£2,088.46

Melt No. 1 began as a question: what happens when the objects we treat as untouchable begin to lose their shape?

The figure stands like an award, a monument, a saint, or a public idol, but its authority is no longer stable. The gold seems to soften and run downward, turning the icon back into matter: weight, surface, heat, reflection, and residue. I wanted the work to hold that tension between admiration and collapse, between beauty and the strange pressure we place on symbols.

The piece is special because it uses gold not only as decoration, but as the subject itself. Gold usually suggests permanence, value, and status. Here, it becomes unstable. It reflects light, but it also questions what we choose to glorify.

Created in 18k gold on black, Melt No. 1 is a 16 by 20 inch artwork, matted to 20 by 24 inches. It is part of my continuing investigation into gold, black space, material presence, and the fragile power of icons.
