I mainly paint people, not realistic but precise or necessarily recognisable. For me, the fun in painting is in the material that often does something I don't expect and I like to make use of that. Each painting is therefore a build-up of ever-new layers and residues of existing layers. Paint is allowed to spill out, skim, mix. Coincidence plays a big role, but I deploy it consciously. I like to constantly put something 'in between' the person depicted and the viewer, to break the built-up image each time. I am still finding found greater freedom in this. (Incidentally, the people I 'portray' do not exist, I just 'sculpt' until a head does something to me).
This triptych started out as individual paintings but more and more they connected with each other.
