This large textured abstract painting is about the ways we change throughout our lives — sometimes through decisions we make consciously, and sometimes through experiences that reshape us so gradually we hardly notice.

I often think about how a difficult period, a relationship, a loss or an unexpected change can alter something in us. We adapt, resist, learn, let go. Much of this happens quietly. Only later do we look back and realise that we have become someone slightly different.

In this painting, I use the language of landscape to explore that process. Forms resembling water currents, eroded terrain, mountain ridges and drifting clouds appear, disappear and transform across the surface. I don't want them to become one specific place. I like the ambiguity of not knowing whether we are looking at water, earth or air — or perhaps at an inner landscape rather than a physical one.

Erosion is particularly important to me as a metaphor. In nature, it can be slow and almost imperceptible or the result of much stronger forces. It removes and disrupts, but it also reveals, reshapes and creates new forms. There is something very human in that contradiction.

Created with acrylic and natural sand on Yupo paper, the work combines the smoothness of the synthetic surface with tactile, mineral areas of texture. Black, charcoal, grey and white move between softness and intensity, while layers gather, dissolve and re-form to create depth and a sense of continuous movement.

For me, this contemporary abstract landscape is ultimately about becoming. Hardships leave traces, but they do not define the whole of us. We carry some experiences forward, release others, and gradually find new shapes for ourselves.
