Lichen (2026) Original Acrylic Painting by Lander Ver Eecke

80 x 120 x 3cm (unframed)

£1,188.89

This painting draws its inspiration from one of nature’s most resilient and overlooked wonders — lichen. A remarkable symbiosis between fungi and algae, lichen thrives in the most extreme environments on earth: on bare rock faces, in arctic tundra, on ancient stone walls. Slow, silent and almost immortal, lichen transforms its surroundings with an extraordinary palette of yellows, golds, turquoise and deep cobalt blue.

A self-made texture paste was applied horizontally across the canvas in rhythmic, layered strokes, creating a dense relief surface that plays with light and shadow. Depending on the viewing angle and lighting, the ridges and fissures shift in tone and depth — an optical effect that mirrors the way lichen itself changes appearance with the seasons and the light.

Layers of acrylic paint in vivid sulphur yellow, warm gold, turquoise and rich ultramarine were built up over the textured surface, evoking the spectrum of colours found in lichen colonies growing across rock and stone in wild, untouched landscapes.

Up close, the painting reveals an almost microscopic world of texture and colour. From a distance, it reads as a luminous, sweeping horizon — somewhere between earth and sky.

Original, one-of-a-kind work. Ready to hang.
