About the Work
This painting was conceived from an experience during a summer day trip to Highgate Wood in 2016, when I was photographing the landscape as research for another painting.
While walking through the woodland, I came across a natural opening between the trees. The shape immediately struck me as resembling a small portal or natural frame. I began to imagine a female figure standing within this space, almost as though she had emerged from—or was about to enter—another world.
The idea developed further through my interest in the biblical story of Lazarus of Bethany, who, according to the Gospel of John, was raised from the dead by Jesus after four days. At the time, I had recently revisited the story and became particularly drawn to its themes of death, awakening, transformation and rebirth.
My interest was also influenced by David Bowie's final album, Blackstar, and particularly the way his work engages with mortality and the idea of facing death. These ideas became intertwined with my original experience in the woodland.
I deliberately chose to represent the central figure as a woman. Much of the imagery surrounding traditional biblical narratives has historically centred on male protagonists, and I wanted to explore these themes through a female presence instead. The figure became a way of considering the story from a different perspective—one concerned not only with resurrection, but with identity, transformation and the passage between one state of being and another.
The woodland setting therefore becomes more than a landscape. The opening between the trees acts as a threshold: a meeting point between the familiar and the unknown, life and death, and the physical and imagined worlds.
