Last Dawn (2022) Photograph by Pietro Ansaldi

70 x 50 x 0.1cm (unframed) / 66.08 x 44.06cm (actual image size)

£280

Part of the Urban Photographs series, Last Dawn offers a poignant perspective on the modern cityscape. Having lived in Shanghai for a decade, I have always been fascinated by its overwhelming density and relentless energy. Yet, it is in the suspended silence of early dawn—when the streets empty out—that its true essence reveals itself.

Captured on the very last morning of 2023 along the Bund, this work explores the quiet paradox of the megalopolis: immense, yet profoundly solitary. Framing a lone figure engaged in the traditional morning ritual of kite flying against the monumental backdrop, the photograph reduces the world’s largest city to a singular silhouette. It transforms an imposing landscape into an intimate meditation on individuality—a visual reminder that even surrounded by millions, we ultimately rely on ourselves.
