'Jean' is from the series 'We Are'. It is a portrait of Jean Seberg. It shows her in her iconic role from Jean-Luc Godard's 'A Bout de Souffle' (1960). Behind her is an FBI memo, detailing an authorisation to destroy her reputation and timing the move to happen at a set point in her pregnancy. This work is about conviction and what it costs to stand for something. The cost of this for Seberg is written in the redacted memo; a ruthless move to destroy her name and credibility. Her journey from her glittering, mesmerising presence on the movie screen to her lonely death in her car on a Parisienne street witnesses the strength it took to carve her own life in the face of the destructive power that made her its mark.
