Tetiana Cherevan – Ensō
“A circle becomes like the Universe!” — Yamada Reirin

The series was born after a journey to Ko Samui, where an abandoned gallery revealed canvases partly eaten by termites. They were cleaned and reused, turning decay into creation and giving the works a “second life.” Many bore the zen motif ensō — a hand-drawn circle symbolizing integrity, enlightenment, and the cyclical nature of existence.

Using ensō as background for eight portraits, the artist amplifies their philosophical depth, merging western individuality with the oriental idea of imperfection. The female figures embody “the infinite in finite,” their strength softened by floral Art Nouveau ornamentation, golden tones, and hieratic compositions. These works reflect fragility, renewal, and timeless dialogue between matter and spirit, showing that even in transience lies the seed of eternity.

This artwork was presented at the 2020 Bangkok Art Exhibition at Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC).
