THE TWO OF US
Oil on canvas, 2004
The Two of Us was born from an intimate dialogue between two generations — mother and daughter — and from a meeting of two different ways of seeing the world.
The starting point was a drawing created by my daughter, in which she imagined her own intimate universe, populated by family figures, imaginary characters, and the toys that belonged to her childhood. I did not approach her drawing simply as a child’s image, but as an emotional map — a spontaneous record of how the world was perceived through the eyes of innocence.
In The Two of Us, I followed the forms, colours, rhythms, and atmosphere of the original drawing, allowing its spontaneity and expressive freedom to remain present while translating them into the language and materiality of my own painting. The apparent simplicity of the forms preserves something essential: the directness of a child’s gaze and the freedom of imagination.
The work is therefore more than a reinterpretation of an existing image. It is a shared space between two generations, where the child’s gesture meets the artist’s hand, where memory meets the present, and where two individual worlds become one visual experience.
The Two of Us speaks about connection, continuity, and the invisible bond between mother and daughter. It preserves a moment of encounter between two ways of seeing — one born from childhood and one transformed through artistic experience.
The painting becomes, ultimately, a shared universe: two voices, two perspectives, two lives — held together within a single image.
