Original artwork description
Impermanence is inspired by the geological layers uncovered in Pompeii — a city frozen in time by the overwhelming force of nature, slowly reclaimed by the earth that buried it. It is a meditation on the fragility of everything we build, and the quiet, unstoppable power of nature to take it back.
The process begins with a handmade paste, developed entirely in my own studio from carefully selected materials — strong yet flexible, colorfast and odorless. Applied directly by hand onto canvas, the paste builds a raw, stratified surface of ridges, horizontal lines and organic formations, echoing the geological cross-sections found in volcanic rock and ancient excavation sites.
As the paste dried, a network of fine cracks formed naturally across the surface — unrepeatable and unplanned, shaped entirely by the material’s own drying logic. Warm ochres, cool silvers and deep rust tones were then layered gradually in acrylic, building the palette of volcanic soil, ancient stone and weathered earth.
The result is a surface that feels simultaneously ancient and alive — a landscape shaped by time, pressure, and forces beyond human control.
This is Earthbound Abstraction — where geology becomes memory, and memory becomes art.
