Tears that mean something entirely different from ordinary sadness: Ignatius, from the Mystiques series, gives a free interpretation of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, shown here weeping in a state Christian tradition called the gift of tears.
That gift was understood as a spirit's capacity to feel, intensely enough for itself, for others, and for the divine, that the feeling overflows into something visible, tears as proof of a presence rather than a symptom of grief. Ignatius carries this openly, and the series treats it less as theology than as raw human fragility, poetic and melancholic rather than doctrinal.
Whether he's laughing or sad barely matters in the end. The tears accompany him either way, the same as they accompany anyone who feels enough to overflow.
