Biography
Born in Rotherham in 1971, North Yorkshire-based artist Jon Paul Wilson seamlessly blends traditional techniques with a precision honed from a background in commercial design. Though he holds a degree in Environmental Studies, Jon Paul’s artistic foundation was forged working in print reprographics, where the fastidious task of painting masks for lithographic films developed his remarkably disciplined brushwork. His technical expertise was further expanded through commercial digital design in the advertising sector.
A lifelong sketcher, Jon Paul spent years masterfully reproducing historical masterpieces to deeply comprehend the methods of the past. His distinct style is informed by an eclectic mix of influences: the structured landscape compositions of John Constable, the vivid palette of Vincent van Gogh, the delicate brushwork of Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and the bold, decorative elements of Henri Matisse and the Pre-Raphaelites. A selected competitor on Sky TV’s Landscape Artist of the Year and a frequent Open exhibition contributor, his work has been featured in regional showcases, including the East Coast Open at the Scarborough Art Gallery. Jon Paul currently creates his vibrant works from his home studio in Folkton, North Yorkshire.”
