Harmony (2026) Original Acrylic Painting by Paul Cheng

I sought to capture one of the most captivating moments in a live jazz performance, when musicians become completely absorbed in their music and allow melodies to flow freely through the air. The two performers are immersed in their own musical world, while the splashes of paint and scattered highlights transform into visual notes dancing across the canvas. My intention was to show that music can not only be heard but also seen, conveying rhythm, passion, and the spirit of improvisation.
I combined elements of Expressionism and Impressionism, using bold, loose brushwork to define the musicians’ expressions and the structure of their instruments. The dark background enhances the metallic glow of the brass, drawing attention to the performers. Layered paint application, energetic color transitions, and splattered textures create a sense of movement and rhythm, infusing the composition with vitality and emotional intensity.
