Grasses

Some mornings, the landscape seems to disappear in front of you.

I was photographing near Yosemite when the fog came down across this grassland. The horizon had almost vanished, leaving just the golden grasses, a few dark fence posts and a white sky that seemed to merge with the land.

I was drawn to the simplicity of it. The grasses lean in the same direction, as though the wind has just passed through. The fence posts gradually disappear into the mist. There's a suggestion of a working landscape, but very little else to distract you.

I like photographs that leave room for you to look. The longer you spend with this one, the more you notice the different textures and tones in the grass. What first looks like an almost empty landscape turns out to be full of detail.

I photographed this on my digital Leica M8. I didn't crop the image; what you see is the full frame, exactly as I made it.

The print

I print each photograph in my own studio on Hahnemühle Photo Rag archival paper. Every print is colour-managed and checked carefully before packing. I handle the printing and shipping personally rather than using a drop-shipping service.
