California. 2009.
Leica M8.
A vast open grassland near Yosemite, California, 2009, shot on a digital Leica. The sky is a flat, featureless white — fog or high overcast sitting so low it dissolves the horizon entirely, the land fading into it without a clear line of separation. The world has been reduced to almost nothing: grass, mist, and silence.
In the foreground the detail is rich and precise — and at 32 inches wide, it commands attention in a way the eye can properly inhabit. Dry golden grasses and dark-stemmed scrub lean together in loose, wind-pressed drifts, the individual stems fully legible at this scale, amber and straw and deep brown threaded through one another. The grasses have a direction, a lean, as though the wind has only just passed through and the stillness that followed is very recent. As the eye moves back into the middle distance the individual detail softens and merges, the grasses becoming a continuous warm wash before dissolving into the white fog.
Running across the middle of the frame, almost missed on first glance, a fence line — a handful of dark wooden posts spaced at wide intervals, receding into the mist until they too disappear. A quietly isolated detail that speaks to human presence without showing any. The fence neither begins nor ends within the frame.
The palette is extraordinarily restrained: warm gold and amber in the grasses, cool grey-white above, the two meeting in the middle distance in a soft, even haze. The digital Leica renders it with characteristic precision and tonal fidelity — nothing over-stated, nothing lost.
Shot on a Leica M8, and printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag. Full frame, never cropped, exactly as it was.
Every print is colour managed and finished in my own studio. I oversee each one personally — from printing and packing to shipping — I do not drop ship. I use only the finest archival papers, and each print is hand-signed and accompanied by a signed, numbered certificate of authenticity.
