[Story behind the work]
This artwork is part of ikasu’s geometric textile art series, created from vintage Japanese kimono textiles.
Using fragments of historic fabrics arranged into sharp, radiating forms, the piece explores the balance between tradition and modern minimalism.

The composition is inspired by the Japanese concept of light breaking through silence - a quiet moment of movement and expansion within stillness. The intersecting lines are unified with gold toned details reminiscent of kintsugi, the Japanese philosophy that embraces transformation, imperfection, and renewal.

While the original kimono once existed as wearable objects carrying memories of another era, they are reimagined here as contemporary textile art, allowing the materials to continue their story in modern spaces.

Another artwork from this series has been installed in a hotel in Kyoto, where the calm geometric composition complements contemporary Japanese interiors.

[Meaning of patterns and colors]
The warm gold, beige, and ivory tones reflect traditional Japanese aesthetics rooted in harmony, restraint, and natural elegance. Gold has long symbolized light, prosperity, and sacredness in Japanese art and architecture, while soft neutral tones create a feeling of calm and timelessness.

The geometric composition draws inspiration from folded screens, architectural lines, and the abstract balance often found in Japanese interior design. The radiating structure suggests movement, connection, and quiet energy expanding outward from a central point.

Rather than using figurative motifs, this work communicates through rhythm, texture, material, and space, creating a contemplative atmosphere that changes subtly depending on the surrounding light.

[About the Material]
Both fabrics used in this artwork feature the traditional Japanese jimon 地紋 technique - a subtle woven pattern embedded into the textile itself rather than printed on the surface. Historically used in refined kimono and obi fabrics, jimon creates delicate variations in texture that become visible as the light changes across the material.

In this piece, both textiles contain small repeating dot like patterns that softly emerge from the surface. The texture recalls grains of sand, scattered light, or quiet ripples on water - depending on what the viewer wants to see, adding depth and movement while maintaining the calm minimal atmosphere of the composition. This understated craftsmanship reflects a uniquely Japanese aesthetic sensibility: beauty that reveals itself gradually through proximity, light, and attention. Rather than dominating the design, the woven patterns create a quiet dialogue between texture, material, and space.
