Gentlemen Agreement (2021) Original Acrylic Painting by Ralf Schmidt

One of the ideas behind this painting was the issue of corrupt arms deals around the world: The background scene is based on the situation in Syria at that time (and today), while in the foreground, two business partners smile contentedly as they finalize their deal. I had seen some images from there and was horrified by what it looked like. Worldwide, approximately 9.5 billion dollars are generated through arms exports (as of 2021).
At an exhibition where I displayed the painting, one visitor had a different interpretation of it: He saw two figures who, realizing the futility of mutual destruction, had decided to make a fresh start together.
Like most of my paintings, this one also has a symbolic character; it can be applied to situations in the business world.
